Music studio

Make beats and songs in your browser with our own instruments: start from a starter beat in a style, tap drums on the step sequencer, add a melody in the piano roll held to the song's key, change the tempo and the key, save the song to My library and export it as a WAV or its notes as a MIDI file. Nothing is generated by a model, so the song is yours.

How it works

Make something with Music studio

  1. Open the Music studio. Browsers wait for a tap before any sound, so your first tap (a starter, Play or Tap to start) starts it. On an iPhone it plays even with the silent switch on where the phone allows it; if you hear nothing, check the volume.

  2. Pick a starter by feel: Lo-fi, Hip-hop, Trap, House, Disco, Synthwave, Rock or Ambient loads a loop of drums, bass and chords in a key and a tempo, and it plays. Blank song starts an empty one.

  3. Make the beat in the step sequencer: each row is a drum (kick, snare, clap, closed and open hat, more from Add a row) and each square a sixteenth note. Tap a step to turn it on or off and hear the change on the next pass of the loop; choose Tap: strength to make a lit step soft, medium or strong instead. A row's M and S mute and solo it, and its More button holds its volume, Every 2nd step, Every 4th step and Clear. A pattern is 1, 2 or 4 bars; on a phone a bar shows eight steps at a time: switch between steps 1 to 8 and 9 to 16.

  4. Change a sound: each track's Kit or Sound menu holds its presets (drum kits, bass, keys, pads and leads), heard as you choose them. Add drums or Add a synth adds a track, and Mixer sets each track's volume, pan, mute and solo.

  5. Add a melody in the piano roll: tap the Bass, the Chords or a synth you added. The song's scale is lit and Stay in key holds every note to it. In Draw a tap adds a note and a drag moves it; select a note and drag the handle past its end to lengthen it (with a mouse, drag its right edge). In Select, drag a box over notes, then move, copy or delete them with the buttons below the grid. Chord opens the chords of the song's key: pick one, move it a beat earlier or later, and press Add chord. On a computer, turn on Play with keys to play notes from the letter keys, and press L to loop the selected notes or the clip.

  6. Change the tempo, the key and the swing in the top bar; a new key moves the bass and the chords with it. Undo and Redo are always on screen, and Ctrl or Cmd + Z on a computer.

  7. Sign in and press Save to my library under Save and export, then open the song again from My library or your dashboard; inside Classic or Studio, My library opens it in the Music studio's tab.

  8. Press Export WAV for the song rendered once, exactly as it plays, or Export MIDI for its notes, for any other music program. In Classic or Studio, Use in project renders the WAV and makes it the project's song.

  9. Or ask SW Agent: "make a 90 BPM lo-fi beat in A minor" makes the beat and offers Open in the Music studio with it, and "open the music studio" opens it.
